Traditional but transformed by a modernist sensibility... decorative, yet flat... filled with light, yet is the light of a brilliant Broadway set design.

Introduction at one of Collins' solo shows at The Mendelson Gallery

Collins is able to encompass much beauty – and confident power – in these small 12 by 12 inch canvases. This is an important show and it is absolutely beautiful. The paintings are lush, complex, and satisfying.

Collins combines a vivid imagintation with realism and the results are radiantly preserved. Her colors are absolutely splendid, reminiscent of those of Matisse. It is a magical, unforgettable tour.

one certainly finds Matisse in the heavily patterned, color-soaked flattened picture planes. But it is her own style - expressionistic, fanciful, a little of the primitive that infuses these small paintings with life.

Judi Collins returns to Bird in The Hand Gallery with a solo show and this time her palette is ever more saturated so that the paintings are rich, though still refined. Landscapes have moved stylistically closer to her still lifes in placement of objects, patterning and color relations. Through subtle representational distortions and lively patterning, she creates not just a site, but the feeling of a moment, playing with expectations and holding the viewer at the work.
